How Wide Can Your Tiny House Be in New Zealand?

In NZ, you’ve got two main width options for a tiny house on a trailer — plus a third if you’re transporting a wider building. Here’s how each one works.

Option 1: Up to 2.55m Wide (Standard Legal Width)

This is the maximum legal width for a simple light trailer on New Zealand roads. The measurement includes everything on the outside — gutters, cladding, door handles, anything that sticks out.

Most builders set the trailer deck at 2.4m, which gives you around 75mm each side for cladding and other protrusions.

Road requirements:

  • Current WOF

  • Current rego

  • Under 3.5T

  • No extra permits needed

This is the simplest option for towing.

Option 2: 2.55m to 3.1m Wide (Overdimension Category 1 Load)

If you want more interior space, you can go wider — up to 3.1m max. In this case, the house is treated as a load on the trailer, not part of the trailer itself. The key rule is that the home must be removable from the trailer.

We typically build a 2.95m‑wide trailer for a 3.1m house, again giving you around 75mm each side.

Road requirements:

  • Current WOF

  • Current rego

  • Under 3.5T

  • Meets Category 1 overdimension rules (see our blog for details)

This option is great for customers who want more space but still want to tow the trailer home from Napier without needing a pilot vehicle.

Option 3: Over 3.1m Wide

You can build wider than 3.1m, but at this point the home needs to be transported on a separate trailer or truck, and anything 3.1m or wider requires a pilot vehicle.

There are extra costs involved, and once you go past 3.1m you’re really moving into the transportable home category rather than a towable tiny house.

Tiny House Weight

Most tiny homes in NZ end up over the 3.5T limit, which means they can’t be towed on their own wheels and are usually moved on the back of a truck. The same width rules apply when it comes to pilot vehicles — anything under 3.1m wide doesn’t require one. That keeps the move simpler and more affordable compared to homes over 3.1m wide, which do need a pilot. This is why we cater to all needs with both site and road trailer options — you can see them here.
