Subfloor

We recommend a thermal subfloor for your trailer to improve thermal performance thus reducing your heating bills and increasing the comfort of the home, see here. We don’t just screw some plywood to the steel trailer and hope that will perform well. We have used an independent building scientist to calculator thermal performance using different construction methods. After a number of years of trailing we have settled on a system to balance, deck height, thermal performance, weight and cost.

  • Subfloor achieves an r value of R1.8, minimum building code R1.3 (building code is poor)

  • Floor uses a simple and lightweight timber thermal break along with 60mm polystyrene EPS graphite filled.

  • Floor is untreated 20mm Strandfloor with fixing screw heads recessed and not filled, has 8 weeks max exposure in the elements. Can cover with lightweight flooring or apply finish to this surface. See here for example. In wet areas (bathroom and kitchen it is recommend the Strandfloor is sealed with paint or some form of sealer. It is possible to use treated at extra cost, has 12 weeks max exposure in the elements.

  • Floor adds only 40mm to the height.

  • Sub floor weighs 13kg/m2, see below for approximate weights. Remember our trailers are lightweight yet strong.
