How Wide and Long Can Your Trailer Be in New Zealand?

For a simple light trailer on New Zealand roads, the maximum transport size without needing a pilot vehicle is:

• Up to 12.5m long, and

• Up to 3.1m wide,

• Classified as a Category 1 overdimension load.

As long as your trailer stays within these limits, it can be towed anywhere in NZ on its own wheels. Just keep in mind the drawbar needs to be at least 1 metre long, which means your maximum deck length is 11.5m.

Can we build a trailer wider than 3.1m or longer than 12.5m?

Yes — absolutely. But anything over 3.1m wide or over 12.5m long can’t be towed on its own wheels. It must be transported on:

• Another simple light trailer, or

• A truck,

• And if it’s 3.1m or wider, you’ll also need a pilot vehicle.

This adds extra cost, so it’s something to factor in early.
